“Newfoundland Farmer Aims to Break Pumpkin Record”

A farmer in Newfoundland’s Avalon Peninsula is honing his skills in cultivating oversized gourds, aiming to surpass his personal best set four years ago. Clarenville organic farmer Leslee Lake achieved a milestone in 2022 with a 1,034-pound pumpkin named Gourdzilla. Now, his latest creation, Pothole, is on track to outgrow that record, currently estimated at 996 pounds and expected to reach 1,200 pounds before harvest.

Lake, who is dedicated to Pothole’s care, has gone to great lengths to ensure optimal growth conditions, even resorting to unconventional methods like wrapping the pumpkin in a blanket with a heating pad on a cool summer night. Despite a mishap where the heating pad malfunctioned and caused a burn on Pothole, the pumpkin remarkably recovered, leaving a distinctive scar on its surface.

In preparation for the growing season, Lake has implemented various strategies, such as using ground cables typically used to melt ice on roofs, along with above-ground heaters, due to the challenging climate in Newfoundland. He emphasizes the importance of genetics, high-quality soil, and meticulous attention to detail in fertilizer composition and seed selection for successful pumpkin cultivation.

While Lake has achieved success with Pothole, unfortunate circumstances have led to the cancellation of Clarenville’s Giant Pumpkin Festival for 2026, as other growers faced difficulties with their crops this year. Once Pothole is harvested, it will be showcased for public viewing, accompanied by a food donation drive for charity.

Reflecting on the current growing season, Lake acknowledges the adverse impact of cold and damp weather on his other produce, expressing concerns about the ripening of his grapes and the potential threat of frost damage. Despite the challenges, Lake remains resilient, adapting his methods to navigate the unpredictability of agricultural conditions.
