Zelenskyy Pursues Energy Ceasefire Amid Trump’s Social Media Announcement

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has engaged in discussions regarding a potential energy ceasefire with Russia alongside Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, Finnish President Alexander Stubb, and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte. Zelenskyy mentioned that while U.S. President Donald Trump announced an “energy ceasefire” between Ukraine and Russia on social media, he is awaiting further details from the United States.

In an interview with Axios, Zelenskyy expressed that Trump’s social media post was the first he had heard of the purported agreement. However, a senior Ukrainian official informed Reuters that Ukraine was prepared to accept an energy ceasefire if Russia agreed to it. Zelenskyy also took to social media to confirm discussions with Carney, Stubb, and Rutte regarding the ceasefire mentioned by Trump.

Emphasizing Ukraine’s support for the ceasefire, Zelenskyy underscored the importance of Russia’s backing for the initiative. He highlighted Ukraine’s commitment to de-escalation, safeguarding lives, and making decisions to bring an end to the war for enduring peace. This development followed Trump’s previous criticism of Zelenskyy for alleged attacks on Russian diesel facilities, contributing to a global fuel shortage.

Trump’s announcement suggested an immediate implementation of the ceasefire agreement between Russia and Ukraine, urging both parties not to violate it. The White House did not provide further clarification on Trump’s statement, and the Kremlin remained silent on the matter.

Zelenskyy reiterated Ukraine’s readiness to cease attacks on Russian refineries, contingent upon Russia halting its strikes on Ukrainian power infrastructure. Stressing the necessity for tangible assurances, Zelenskyy attributed the conflict in Europe to Russia, expressing willingness to halt energy infrastructure strikes promptly if reciprocated by Russia.

In response to Trump’s remarks urging a leadership change in Ukraine, Zelenskyy proposed organizing elections if Russian President Vladimir Putin agreed to a 60-day ceasefire. Zelenskyy emphasized the need for a cessation of hostilities before any electoral processes could commence, citing Ukrainian law restrictions on holding elections during martial law for security purposes.

The surge in global diesel prices following the Iran conflict has posed challenges for Trump’s Republican Party ahead of the upcoming midterm elections. Zelenskyy denounced Trump’s diesel supply deal with Russia, warning of potential repercussions on Ukraine and civilian casualties. Analysts questioned the long-term impact of Trump’s diesel agreement with Moscow on fuel prices due to the limited volumes involved.

Criticism of the diesel deal extended to U.S. lawmakers, including Republican Rep. Don Bacon, advocating for stricter sanctions rather than their removal. Kyiv residents expressed discontent with Trump’s suggestion of a leadership change in Ukraine amid wartime conditions, with some residents viewing it as a betrayal by international partners.

Zelenskyy indicated ongoing discussions with European leaders and the pursuit of additional air defense packages, including ammunition for combat aircraft to counter Russia’s jet-powered drones. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha is set to participate in a European Union foreign affairs council meeting to deliberate on escalating sanctions against Russia and advancing negotiations on Ukraine’s EU accession.
