“Rescue Mission Underway After Nepal Flash Flood”

Nepal’s military rescuers arrived at a flash flood-stricken area on Monday following the disaster the day before. Helicopters and soldiers delivered provisions and aid to the region along the Budhi Gandaki river in north central Nepal, initiating the evacuation of residents and tourists from the affected zone.

At present, five individuals are missing, and there have been no reported fatalities. Government officials confirmed that an early warning system enabled most individuals to relocate to higher ground before the flood occurred.

The flood on Sunday resulted from a landslide that initially obstructed the river near Chumchure village. It caused significant damage, destroying five bridges, disrupting the construction of three hydropower plants, and impacting numerous residences and farms.

Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority reported that 95 individuals, including nine foreigners, have been relocated to nearby towns. The affected area encompasses popular trekking routes frequented by hikers, with October being a peak period for visitors.

Trucks are transporting essential supplies like food, tents, and medication to accessible regions by road, while military helicopters are airlifting supplies to remote mountain communities. The Budhi Gandaki River converges with the Trishuli River, serving as a vital water passage near Kathmandu.

Social media footage depicts houses and structures being swept away by the swollen river amid towering mountains. The extent of impact on the area’s small villages remains uncertain.

Nepal continues to recuperate from a catastrophic flood that ravaged the mountainous Nepal-China border in August, claiming over 1,400 lives and leaving thousands missing. Prime Minister Balendra Shah’s office announced the conclusion of search and rescue operations on October 5, shifting focus towards infrastructure rehabilitation.
