P.K. Subban to Lead New Animated “Screech Owls” Series

Former NHL standout P.K. Subban is poised to lead and oversee the production of a new animated series based on the popular “Screech Owls” franchise.

The collaboration between Shaftesbury, Sphere Animation, NHL, and Boat Rocker Studios was revealed in an official announcement earlier this week. The upcoming show, inspired by Canadian author Roy MacGregor’s book series and the 2001 live-action version, is scheduled to debut in fall 2027 on CBC and in winter 2028 on Radio-Canada and TFO.

“Screech Owls” follows a group of hockey players who unravel mysteries under the guidance of Coach P.K., emphasizing themes of friendship and teamwork. The series will consist of 26 episodes, each running for 11 minutes.

Hailing from Toronto, Subban is a retired Canadian professional ice hockey defenseman with a career spanning 13 seasons in the NHL, representing the Montreal Canadiens, Nashville Predators, and New Jersey Devils.

In a statement, Subban expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating, “A key aspect of my career has been discovering innovative ways to expand the sport and connect with diverse young audiences, and ‘Screech Owls,’ a series I cherished growing up, achieves just that.”

The animated adaptation of “Screech Owls” will be scripted by John May and Suzanne Bloch, the original creators of the live-action series. Additionally, Sarah Nurse, known for her contributions to PWHL and Team Canada, will make a guest appearance as herself in the show.

Marie McCann, the senior director of children’s content at CBC Kids, commended the series, noting, “This delightful series offers children a blend of friendship, teamwork, and sports in a cheerful animated Canadian setting—a perfect mix of mysteries and hockey that will surely captivate a new generation of viewers.”
