France Denies Authorization for Fishing Permit Near Newfoundland

France’s envoy to Canada confirms that her nation has not authorized a fishing permit near Newfoundland, contrary to reports of a commitment by the French president. Helene Farnaud-Defromont emphasized the need for consultation with Canada before taking such action, as France aims to honor its agreements with the country. Recent news suggested that French President Emmanuel Macron had pledged to grant a trial snow crab license to a fishing company in St-Pierre-et-Miquelon, a French territory near Newfoundland. However, this proposed permit overlaps with Canada’s claimed continental shelf extension. Responding to the situation, Canada’s fisheries minister, Joanne Thompson, urged France to reconsider the plan and indicated ongoing discussions with Global Affairs Canada. Farnaud-Defromont reiterated France’s commitment to upholding existing fishing agreements with Canada, emphasizing the importance of adhering to established rules and respecting partnerships.
