A series of Russian airstrikes in Kyiv resulted in the deaths of three individuals and caused widespread power outages affecting hundreds of thousands of people, as per official reports on Wednesday. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the attack as a blatant disregard for the peace efforts initiated by former U.S. President Donald Trump.
The extensive missile and drone assault focused mainly on Kyiv and Kharkiv, the second-largest city in Ukraine, causing significant damage to 30 energy facilities, Zelenskyy confirmed. Approximately 600,000 residents were left without electricity in the aftermath.
Despite claims by U.S. President Trump about an agreement to cease strikes on energy infrastructure following the recent lifting of sanctions on Russian diesel, neither Moscow nor Kyiv have officially acknowledged such an agreement.
Zelenskyy criticized the deliberate and conspicuous nature of the attack, citing it as a display of unprecedented disrespect towards the United States by Russia. He emphasized Russia’s disregard for the statements made by the American President.
The Russian defense ministry reported hitting four power plants in and around Kyiv and two in Kharkiv, among other targets, on Wednesday.
Ukraine acknowledged intercepting only four out of the 39 missiles launched, highlighting its vulnerable air defenses against fast-moving ballistic missiles and drones due to a shortage of weaponry.
With Russia intensifying its assaults on Ukrainian cities in anticipation of winter and facing challenges on the battlefield, concerns have risen regarding potential widespread power and heating disruptions in the country.
