A coroner’s inquest date has been scheduled for the investigation into the passing of an Albertan woman at Lake of the Woods District Hospital (LWDH) in Kenora, Ontario, over four years ago.
Kaylee Martha Dallas Crowchild, a member of Tsuut’ina Nation, a Dene community in southern Alberta, tragically passed away on September 20, 2022, at LWDH following an incident at the Kenora District Jail, as reported by a news release from Ontario’s Ministry of the Solicitor General.
Coroner’s inquests are obligatory under the provincial Coroners Act following a death in custody.
During the inquest, witnesses will present details surrounding the circumstances of the individual’s demise. Subsequently, a five-person jury will identify the deceased, determine the time and place of death, establish the medical cause of death, and determine the manner of death.
The jury will categorize the cause of death as natural, accidental, homicidal, suicidal, or undetermined. While they cannot assign legal blame, they are empowered to issue recommendations to prevent similar incidents.
Kaylee Crowchild’s inquest is scheduled to commence at 10 a.m. ET on November 16, expected to span six days and feature testimonies from approximately 11 witnesses, conducted via video conference.
Dr. John Carlisle will preside over the proceedings, with Robert Kozak, Jenna Simpson, and Makenzie Chan serving as inquest counsel.
The inquest proceedings will be available for online viewing through a provided link.
