“Atlantic Veterinary College Plans $27.1M HVAC Upgrades”

The Atlantic Veterinary College, part of the University of Prince Edward Island, is planning significant upgrades to its HVAC system to uphold its accreditation status. Tim Walker, the university’s vice-president of administration and finance, highlighted the need for modernization in the building’s aging systems. Ensuring a conducive environment for animal welfare, students, and staff is a top priority for the college.

The proposed five-year capital plan for the upgrades amounts to approximately $27.1 million. Managing the project poses challenges to keep the 330,000-square-foot facility operational during the renovation period. Walker emphasized the criticality of maintaining accreditation, stating that failure to address facility shortcomings could jeopardize the academic program’s standing and impact the broader regional veterinary education landscape.

Collaborating with provincial partners, the college secured an interprovincial loan to support the HVAC improvements. The AVC, catering to a diverse range of animals from farm livestock to household pets, underscores the essential role of proper air circulation in its operations. Walker stressed the importance of phased implementation to mitigate disruptions for students, faculty, staff, and animals, recognizing the project’s scale and significance in ensuring a safe and efficient facility.

Addressing biohazard concerns, Walker highlighted the proper handling of biomedical waste generated by animals at the college’s emergency center. The phased approach to the upgrades aims to minimize disruptions and ensure a seamless transition while enhancing the overall functionality of the AVC.
