“New Sign Raises Awareness for Migrant Worker Safety”

A handmade cross with the words “Descanse en paz” (rest in peace) stands by a picturesque vineyard on Concession 6 Road in rural Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario. This is where Sinhue Garcia, a 39-year-old Mexican migrant farm worker, was tragically killed in a hit-and-run while cycling home one night in June.

In a solemn gathering by the roadside, a new sign was unveiled to raise awareness and improve safety for migrant workers in the area. The sign, bearing the message “Look out for migrant workers” along with a cyclist symbol, was installed by the Migrant Workers Alliance for Change.

The alliance highlighted the dangers faced by migrant workers who often travel on foot or by bike along rural roads, emphasizing the need for enhanced safety measures. Over the past seven years, seven workers have been either killed or seriously injured at various locations in Niagara-on-the-Lake and St. Catharines.

Efforts are underway to make roads safer for migrant workers by implementing measures such as safer shoulders, bike lanes, improved lighting, safer crossings, and reduced speed limits. The alliance also advocates for fair treatment, including proper housing standards, minimum wages, and overtime pay for these workers, along with granting them permanent residency status.

Migrant workers have been an integral part of Niagara’s agricultural industry for decades, yet they still face precarious living conditions and safety risks while carrying out their duties. The alliance stresses the importance of taking immediate action at all levels of government to protect these essential workers.

As part of their advocacy, the alliance is urging for a coroner’s inquest in Ontario to investigate the deaths of migrant workers in road accidents and to prevent future tragedies. The community is called upon to show respect and support for farm workers who contribute significantly to the regional economy.

Government officials emphasize their commitment to upholding the rights and protections of temporary foreign workers, including migrant farm workers. Programs like the Migrant Worker Support Program aim to assist workers in understanding and asserting their rights while providing essential services.

Local municipal candidates are being urged to prioritize migrant worker road safety, dignified housing, worker involvement in safety plans, and support for a coroner’s inquest. The alliance reports positive engagement from candidates who have signed a pledge to advance these critical priorities, signaling a step in the right direction.
