“U.S. Coast Guard Rescues 16 Adrift in Pacific”

In the early hours of Friday, the U.S. Coast Guard successfully rescued 16 individuals found floating in the Pacific Ocean near Mexico’s Baja California coast. Authorities are currently conducting a search for additional individuals in distress, as reported by Petty Officer Chris Sappey.

The sighting of several people adrift in the water, approximately 225 kilometers west of Ensenada, was made around 1 a.m. PT. The circumstances that led to these individuals being in the water remain unclear, as no vessel has been located according to Sappey. A rescued individual mentioned that there might have been up to 27 people on a boat, but further details about their activities are unknown.

Despite no vessel being present, only people were spotted in the water, Sappey confirmed. The rescued individuals are being transported to hospitals in San Diego for medical attention. The U.S. Coast Guard is collaborating with Mexican authorities in search efforts, utilizing a helicopter, a fixed-airwing plane, and a cutter.

Increasingly, migrants are opting for perilous sea journeys facilitated by smugglers to circumvent heavily guarded land borders, including those along California’s coast. Panga boats depart from Mexico under the cover of darkness, sometimes traveling hundreds of kilometers northward.

Over recent years, there have been multiple incidents of migrant boats capsizing en route to California. In May 2025, three individuals lost their lives when a panga overturned near the U.S.-Mexico border, around 56 kilometers north. Additionally, in 2023, a tragic event occurred where eight people perished when two boats involved in migrant smuggling approached a San Diego beach amidst dense fog, resulting in one capsizing in the surf. This incident marked one of the deadliest maritime smuggling occurrences along the U.S. coast.

In a separate incident, a San Diego resident was sentenced to 18 years in prison in 2022 for operating a small vessel carrying 32 migrants. The vessel broke apart in rough surf off the coast, leading to the deaths of three individuals and injuries to over two dozen more.
