Northwestern Ontario residents interested in taking climate-friendly actions can gather at the fourth annual Northwest Climate Gathering in Thunder Bay on Saturday. The event will focus on sustainable travel practices, with local bike shops and active transportation advocates leading discussions on enhancing regional active transportation from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Outpost pub at Lakehead University.
Organizer and Lakehead student, Heather Wright, highlighted the gathering’s role in fostering connections and discussions around sustainable actions that benefit the climate while promoting physical activity and community engagement. Attendees will have the opportunity to brainstorm ways to enhance the city’s transportation infrastructure and facilities.
Thunder Bay is committed to climate adaptation and sustainability plans, emphasizing the shift away from fossil fuel-powered transport. Encouraging carpooling, public transit, biking, and walking can help reduce carbon emissions and inspire others to make eco-friendly transportation choices.
Heather McLeod, a founding volunteer organizer, emphasized the importance of community collaboration in generating innovative solutions for sustainable living. The event aims to spark dialogues on active transportation and facilitate connections with organizations supporting sustainable initiatives.
The gathering will feature activities centered around cycling, including youth bike riding initiatives and exploring the new Oliver Road multi-use trail. It serves as a platform for individuals to share ideas and collaborate on actionable strategies for a greener, healthier community.
