Laura Hall claimed her first Canadian long track championships title by outperforming her competitors in the 3,000m event. Despite the absence of seasoned athletes Isabelle Weidemann and Ivanie Blondin, Hall faced tough competition from Valérie Maltais but managed to cross the finish line first in a time of 4:08.282. Expressing her joy, Hall mentioned that although some top contenders were missing, winning was gratifying and hoped for continued success in upcoming races.
In the men’s 5,000m race, Graeme Fish achieved the second-best time of his career at 6:23.889, surpassing Daniel Hall and newcomer Jack Hanson. Fish, who overcame recent injuries and narrowly missed Olympic qualification, highlighted his race strategy and improvement in technique as key factors in his success.
Elsewhere, familiar names Béatrice Lamarche and Laurent Dubreuil dominated their respective 500m events, setting the stage for another round scheduled for the following day. Lamarche set a new track record of 37.613 in her hometown, narrowly missing her personal best from the previous season. Lamarche expressed her satisfaction with her performance and the pursuit of track records.
Dubreuil, a bronze medallist in the 500m event at the recent Olympics, continued his winning streak by clocking 34.536 to finish ahead of Antoine Roger and Anders Johnson. The seasoned Dubreuil’s consistent performance showcased his skill and experience in the sport.
The competition would resume the next day with the second round of the 500m races for both men and women, along with the 1500m event. Viewers could catch the action through live streaming on CBCSports.ca, CBC Gem, and Radio-Canada Sports digital platforms at 11:45 a.m. ET.
