Ottawa’s Gabriela Dabrowski and her partner from Brazil, Luisa Stefani, have secured a spot in the women’s doubles final at the Wuhan Open tennis tournament. They achieved a convincing 6-2, 6-1 victory over American Nicole Melichar-Martinez and Spain’s Cristina Bucșa. The upcoming final will see Dabrowski and Stefani facing the winner of the semifinal match between Czech player Kateřina Siniaková and Australia’s Storm Hunter versus the Italian duo of Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini.
Meanwhile, in the women’s singles competition, British player Sonay Kartal continued her impressive performance by defeating former French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko in a tight match with scores of 7-6 (9), 7-6 (5) to reach the final. Kartal’s triumph over Ostapenko adds to her earlier victories against Elina Svitolina and Jasmine Paolini.
Reflecting on her challenging match against Ostapenko, Kartal described it as one of the toughest she has ever played, acknowledging the Latvian’s exceptional skills. Kartal expressed satisfaction with her mental strength during the game, considering it one of her career-best performances.
In the final, Kartal will battle against another Grand Slam finalist, Maja Chwalinska, who defeated six-time major winner Iga Swiatek in an all-Polish semifinal match. Swiatek, seeded No. 7, displayed a mix of 37 winners and 33 unforced errors, while the 16th-seeded Chwalinska showed a more controlled game with 19 winners and only seven unforced errors.
Chwalinska, who previously reached the French Open final as a qualifier, aims to secure her first career title as she faces the 170th-ranked Kartal, who is vying for her second career title. Kartal, aged 24 with a career-high ranking of 44 and one singles title, overcame a six-month hiatus earlier this year due to a stress fracture in her back.
Additionally, Swiatek is focused on improving her position in the Race to the WTA Finals rankings as she currently stands 10th, with the top eight players qualifying for the upcoming season-ending event in Indian Wells. The former world No.1 player is determined to secure a spot in the prestigious tournament.
