At Whistle Bend Place, a long-term care facility in Whitehorse, heightened infection prevention measures have been implemented in response to two respiratory illnesses. While the facility has not been placed on lockdown, officials are taking steps to control the spread of COVID-19 and Type A influenza outbreaks.
The COVID-19 outbreak was reported on September 29 in one area of the facility, followed by the identification of Type A influenza in another area. As a precautionary measure, a facility-wide respiratory illness outbreak was declared on October 9 to ensure consistent infection prevention and control practices.
Visits to the facility are still permitted, with each resident limited to one designated visitor to minimize illness transmission. Exceptions can be granted for compassionate and end-of-life visits. Additional preventive measures such as masking, increased cleaning routines, and close monitoring of residents and staff are being enforced.
Residents have access to flu and COVID vaccines to further protect against these illnesses. Public health officials are actively monitoring the situation, and the precautionary measures will remain in place as long as necessary to safeguard the well-being of residents and staff.
