“Murder Trial: Couple Hands Over Car Linked to Crime”

A couple from Upper Island Cove handed over their 2012 Honda Civic to Matthew Kavanagh the day before the vehicle was reportedly linked to a murder in Bay Roberts. Tracey Clarke and Chris Pike testified at Kavanagh, Stephanie Noftall, and Terry Cole’s trial, who are facing charges of first-degree murder and indecently interfering with a body in the death of Michael Fillier on September 30, 2024.

Clarke mentioned waking up early to find Kavanagh at her door, while Pike stated that he had arranged for Kavanagh to fix the car’s exhaust pipe and brakes as they both worked on a fishing boat. Clarke noted that they willingly gave Kavanagh the keys, assuming he was working on the repairs. Pike tried contacting Kavanagh without success, believing he was fishing offshore.

The prosecution alleges that Kavanagh and Cole used the Honda Civic on the morning of the incident. Video evidence is expected to show the car alongside a blue Chevrolet Colorado at a gas station before both vehicles left and the Colorado was later found burning with Fillier’s body inside.

During cross-examination, Pike denied ever offering Kavanagh the car in exchange for erasing a debt. He emphasized the car’s value and refused to accept it back from the police, instructing them to dispose of it due to its connection to the murder. Pike expressed his reluctance to own a vehicle associated with such a crime.

The trial continues with the jury reviewing surveillance footage, with more evidence expected to be presented in the coming days.
