Passionate 84-Year-Old Knitter Overcomes Challenges to Donate 1,200+ Tuques

Leonard Foidart, an 84-year-old passionate knitter from Notre-Dame-de-Lourdes, Manitoba, has a unique routine before starting his knitting projects. Due to health reasons, Foidart, who lost his legs in the early 1990s, customarily lies face down on a specially designed cot to knit. He carefully selects the appropriate wool and adjusts the lighting before beginning his creative process.

Despite facing physical challenges that limit his sitting time, Foidart has managed to knit and donate over 1,000 tuques to various charitable organizations in the past five years. These donations have benefitted causes such as Winnipeg’s Siloam Mission and Central Plains Cancer Services in Portage la Prairie, with much of the wool being generously donated to him.

In addition to his knitting endeavors, Foidart has faced personal hardships, including being diagnosed with bone and prostate cancer and losing his wife to a stroke last year. He fondly remembers his wife teaching him how to knit and feels her presence with him every time he works on a new tuque.

Determined to continue his charitable work, Foidart refuses to let his health challenges hinder his passion for knitting. Following his cancer diagnosis, he ingeniously crafted a mobile cot with added comfort features to accommodate his needs while knitting. Foidart, a former letter carrier and carpenter, credits his problem-solving skills and perseverance for overcoming obstacles throughout his 35 years of being in a wheelchair.

With meticulous record-keeping, Foidart diligently documents each donation, ensuring that his contributions reach those in need. His most recent donation of 200 tuques was made to the Portage la Prairie Community Revitalization Corporation, which supports vulnerable individuals within the community.

Tawnee Kowerchuk, the co-ordinator at the corporation, expressed gratitude for Foidart’s dedication and surprise when he personally delivered the tuques. She emphasized the importance of Foidart’s donations for those in need and praised his commitment to helping others.

Looking ahead, Foidart is already busy working on his next batch of tuques. Despite not setting specific production goals, he remains steadfast in his commitment to continue knitting and improving his craft, emphasizing the rarity of mistakes after creating over 1,200 tuques.

Foidart’s unwavering dedication to knitting for a cause exemplifies his selfless nature and commitment to making a positive impact on his community.
