“Silver Guardian Program Addresses Dementia Domestic Violence”

Police services in the South Shore region are implementing new protocols for handling domestic violence incidents involving individuals with dementia, a trend that is reportedly increasing. The RCMP and Bridgewater Police Service recently introduced the Silver Guardian Program in response to this growing issue.

Cpl. Dominic Laflamme of Lunenburg County RCMP highlighted the need for tools to manage these cases due to the rising number of incidents associated with the aging population. The program aims to provide an alternative to the justice system for individuals facing domestic violence charges while suffering from conditions like Alzheimer’s.

Laflamme emphasized the importance of proactive measures, encouraging those in relationships with dementia patients who fear potential abuse to contact the police preemptively for support services. In situations where assaults occur, even involving individuals with degenerative brain diseases, charges must be laid, but authorities will seek non-court resolutions with Crown prosecutors.

The initiative stemmed from a tragic event in Mahone Bay last year, prompting the RCMP to reassess its policies and practices. The Bridgewater Police Service also recognized the aging demographics in their area, leading to the establishment of the Lunenburg County Seniors Safety Program and the subsequent funding application for the Silver Guardian Project to address the surge in domestic violence incidents.

Deputy Chief of Bridgewater Police Service, Danny MacPhee, noted the increase in calls related to dementia patients involved in potentially dangerous situations. He stressed the importance of considering the unique circumstances of these cases, stating that incarcerating individuals lacking capacity or awareness is not an appropriate solution.

The community’s evolving needs have prompted law enforcement agencies to adopt a more holistic approach to handling such incidents, prioritizing care over punitive measures. This shift reflects a broader commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of vulnerable populations.
