Toronto Mets Alumnus Liam Hicks Shines in World Series

Tampa Bay Rays catcher Liam Hicks didn’t attract attention as a standout player while growing up in Toronto or upon high school graduation. However, honing his batting skills with the Toronto Mets in the Canadian Premier Baseball League, Hicks displayed a strong work ethic and a drive for improvement.

After impressing at the U.S. junior college level with the Mineral Area Cardinals, Hicks transferred to Arkansas State, paving his way to professional baseball and now the World Series. Recognized for his hitting prowess, Mineral Area’s hitting coach, Jordan Thompson, highlighted Hicks’s continuous growth in strength and athleticism.

At 27, Hicks joined the Rays this season following a trade with Miami. His performance soared with 18 home runs, 82 runs batted in, and a .284 batting average. Embracing his role with the Rays’ pitching staff, Hicks frequently occupies a crucial spot in the batting order during the playoffs.

Described as a talented player and a person of high caliber by Rich Leitch, vice-president of operations for the Toronto Mets, Hicks is set to compete in Game 1 of the Fall Classic against the Milwaukee Brewers at American Family Field on Friday evening.

Recalling Hicks’s early days with the Mets, Leitch mentioned his initial lack of American school offers despite his talent and a remarkable swing. Eventually, Hicks’s decision to move south after his successful college seasons led him to a notable progression in the baseball arena.

As the lone Canadian on Tampa Bay’s roster, Hicks stands out among other Canadian baseball talents. While infielder Tyler Black and catcher Bo Naylor are on the Brewers’ 40-man list, they are not on the active roster. Hicks’s exceptional rookie season statistics and performance metrics have earned him recognition among MLB rookies and qualified hitters.

Recognized for his fitting profile within the Rays’ playing style, Hicks’s contributions extend beyond the field, as highlighted by his participation with Team Canada at the World Baseball Classic. Regarded as a team player with a strong work ethic and determination, Hicks serves as a role model for aspiring baseball players, embodying perseverance and a relentless pursuit of improvement.
