Charlottetown Councilor and Mayoral Candidate Fined for Illegal School Bus Passing

A city councilor who is also a candidate for mayor has been issued a fine by Charlottetown police for illegally passing a school bus. Mitchell Tweel disclosed that the incident occurred in September but the ticket was recently processed in provincial court.

Tweel admitted that he momentarily lost focus while driving next to the school bus and only stopped after the bus honked at him. He took accountability for his actions, expressing deep regret and acknowledging his mistake.

Representing Ward 4 – Spring Park and serving on Charlottetown council since 1994, Tweel, who is running for mayor, has pledged to pay the fine promptly. Prince Edward Island imposes severe penalties for such offenses, including potential driving suspensions and hefty fines.

Despite the incident, Tweel remains optimistic about his mayoral campaign, emphasizing the importance of honesty and taking responsibility for his actions. Charlottetown residents will cast their votes on November 2, with Tweel maintaining that he handled the situation appropriately once he realized his error.
