“Acadian Credit Union to Merge with East Coast Credit Union”

The Acadian Credit Union is gearing up for a merger with the East Coast Credit Union following some internal discord within the Acadian community. The decision was made after a special meeting last month where the Acadian Credit Union board suggested that members approve the merger to establish a credit union network covering the entire province.

Daniel LeBlanc, the Chair of Acadian Credit Union, expressed satisfaction with the members’ vote in favor of the merger. He highlighted that the combined entity will be able to provide an expanded range of services to clients, particularly French-speaking members, while preserving the unique Acadian identity and cooperative ethos cherished by the members.

Voting on the merger took place from September 22 to October 2 and was accessible to members from various Credit Unions in the province, including iNova and Teacher Plus credit unions in the Halifax Regional Municipality. The East Coast Credit Union confirmed that the approval threshold of 66.67% was exceeded at all four credit unions where voting took place.

The merged credit union is anticipated to oversee approximately $2 billion in assets and cater to more than 65,000 members across Nova Scotia through a network of 24 locations. The merger is scheduled to be finalized on January 1, 2027.
