Alberta Premier Danielle Smith is scheduled to address the media in Calgary on Wednesday morning, following her televised speech on Tuesday evening regarding the outcome of the Alberta referendum. During her Tuesday speech, Smith emphasized that her United Conservative Party government would initiate reforms based on the mandate received from Albertans on referendum night. She also assured that there would be no further referendum on Alberta independence during her tenure as premier. As of Wednesday morning, the results of the 10-question referendum are still being reported gradually.
While CBC’s projections on Monday indicated strong support from Albertans to remain in Canada, the outcomes of several other referendum questions remain undecided. Smith had previously indicated her intention to adhere to the principle of “majority rule,” requiring a threshold of 50% plus one vote to address the initial nine questions related to immigration and constitutional matters.
The news conference on Wednesday presents the first opportunity for journalists to inquire about the referendum results from Monday and the government’s strategies post the significant vote. The news conference will begin at 11:30 a.m. MT. For those interested, the event can be viewed online.
