“Aldi named UK’s most budget-friendly supermarket for 2025”

Aldi has been recognized as the most economical supermarket in 2025 by consumer advocacy group Which?. Which? monitors grocery prices daily and discloses the most budget-friendly stores monthly. Throughout 2025, Aldi held the title of the cheapest supermarket for ten out of 12 months, marking its fifth consecutive year as the UK’s most affordable grocery retailer.

In December, Aldi topped the list for 68 items with an average cost of £123.60. Lidl closely followed, with an average of £123.70 for both Lidl Plus members and non-members. Lidl claimed the title of the cheapest supermarket twice in 2025, specifically in July and October. The price gap between Aldi and Lidl averaged just 77p per month.

Comparatively, Asda shoppers paid an average of £134.89 in December for the same 68 items, while Tesco Clubcard members were charged £135.84, or £139.12 without a Clubcard.

Sainsbury’s Nectar cardholders spent £141.45, or £143.74 without a Nectar card, in December, while Waitrose emerged as the priciest option, costing £170.46 for the listed items.

Research from Which? showed that Waitrose prices were on average 35% higher than Aldi’s throughout 2025. The comparison also extended to a larger weekly shopping list of 180 items, where Asda was the most cost-effective option in December, totaling £450.82.

Tesco Clubcard holders paid an average of £462 for the 180 items in December, while non-Clubcard holders spent £493.53. Morrisons shoppers had a bill of £466.04 with a loyalty discount, reaching £467.46 without one. Sainsbury’s Nectar cardholders paid £468.61, and non-members paid £501.89.

Waitrose remained the most expensive choice for the larger shopping list, with an average bill of £529.17. The analysis by Which? factored in special offers and loyalty prices but excluded multibuy deals.

Reena Sewraz, Which? Retail Editor, emphasized Aldi’s consistent cost efficiency, stating that while Lidl maintains strong competition, Aldi’s affordability prevailed throughout the year. She highlighted Asda as a great choice for those seeking a wider range of branded products at lower prices.

In a time when food expenses are a significant concern for many households, comparing and selecting supermarkets wisely could lead to substantial savings annually.
