Algoma steel’s electric arc furnace in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, is currently out of operation due to a power outage. The furnace was automatically shut down upon detecting an irregularity. The issue is believed to stem from a turbine malfunction at the Lake Superior Generating Station.
To address the problem, Algoma Steel has initiated repair work and decided to advance a maintenance outage originally scheduled for a later period. This strategic move aims to minimize overall downtime throughout the year and enhance operational resilience upon restart. The company anticipates that the outage may extend up to 21 days.
The Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO), responsible for managing Ontario’s power system, is actively collaborating with Algoma Steel to explore potential temporary alternative power solutions in response to the unforeseen generator failure.
Despite the furnace shutdown, Algoma Steel assures that its finishing operations will continue without disruptions to customer orders.
