An Irish amateur rider has accused top British jockey Nico de Boinville of directing a racially abusive comment towards him during an incident at the Cheltenham Festival. Declan Queally and de Boinville, who rides for trainer Nicky Henderson, had a heated confrontation during the Turners Novices’ Hurdle, the first race on the festival’s second day.
Tensions rose as the riders vied for position among the 21-horse field, leading to two false starts before the race finally began. De Boinville finished second on Act Of Innocence, while Queally took fifth on I’ll Sort That.
After the race, Queally expressed his displeasure, stating, “Being abused by an English rider Nico de Boinville is not very nice. I’m an amateur. I’ve come over here riding in front of my kids and that. Horrific.” De Boinville responded by suggesting Queally reflect on his actions.
Following a stewards’ inquiry, it was reported that several riders, including Queally, had not approached the start correctly, resulting in suspensions for misconduct. Queally also lodged a complaint regarding the incident, alleging that de Boinville used offensive language towards him.
Queally later specified that the comment made by de Boinville was of a racial nature and reported the matter to BHA stewards for investigation. De Boinville declined to comment when contacted.
Stewards adjourned the matter to gather additional evidence after hearing initial statements from Queally and de Boinville.
