American skiing icon Lindsey Vonn airlifted after tragic crash

Lindsey Vonn, an iconic figure in American skiing, experienced a severe crash while competing in the downhill event at the Winter Olympics. Despite a previous ACL injury, the 41-year-old athlete courageously represented Team USA.

Once a gold medalist, Vonn had high hopes for victory in the event but faced setbacks due to her earlier injury. Her return to the sport was made possible by a partial knee replacement in 2024.

Despite a crash in January, Vonn persisted in her determination to compete, completing her required training runs. Unfortunately, her Olympic journey took a tragic turn when she lay motionless on the slopes during the women’s downhill skiing final, necessitating her airlift to a hospital.

The emotional incident prompted a heartfelt reaction from the BBC’s broadcasting team. Commentator Chemmy Alcott expressed deep emotions, highlighting the challenges Vonn faced on the course.

The commentator acknowledged the high risks Vonn undertook, given her physical condition, and expressed sympathy for her and her team. Despite hopes for a recovery, the severity of the situation was evident as medical staff attended to Vonn on the slopes.
