“Argentina Players Hit With FIFA Sanctions”

FIFA handed down sanctions to three Argentine players for their actions following the World Cup final. Midfielder Leandro Paredes received a 10-match ban for his aggressive behavior towards Spanish players Eric Garcia and Gavi. This suspension is one of the harshest in World Cup history, comparable to the punishment given to Luis Suarez in 2014.

Additionally, Argentina’s Nahuel Molina was suspended for seven games, and Thiago Almada received a one-match ban. Paredes and Molina were fined $90,000 each, while Almada was fined $30,000. Paredes’ suspension effectively sidelines him from the Argentina team for a year, as FIFA’s national team schedule includes 10 games until June 2027, all potentially friendlies.

Spain’s Gavi was also banned for one game, specifically a Nations League match against England. Argentine coach Roberto Ayala received a three-game ban and a $30,000 fine. The Argentine Football Association faced fines totaling $110,000 for various incidents during the World Cup, including displaying a political banner and fan misconduct.

Argentina is expected to appeal the sanctions to FIFA and potentially to the Court of Arbitration for Sport. In similar cases, Luis Suarez was suspended for four months in 2014, and Josip Simunic received a 10-game ban in 2013 for inappropriate behavior.

The altercations at the World Cup final between Argentina and Spain resulted in assault charges by FIFA. Spain emerged victorious with a goal from Ferran Torres in extra time, while Argentina’s Enzo Fernandez was sent off during the match. As part of the disciplinary actions, FIFA mandated that Argentina’s next home game be played at 50% capacity and deferred further sanctions for a probationary period.
