“Avianca Flight Makes Emergency Landing in Miami After Turbulence”

Eight passengers were hospitalized after an Avianca Airlines flight traveling to New York City had to make an emergency landing in Miami due to turbulence, as confirmed by local officials and the airline. Greg Chin, the communications director of the Miami-Dade Aviation Department, stated that Avianca Flight 042, which was en route from Medellin, Colombia, to John F. Kennedy International Airport, landed at Miami International Airport at 3:30 a.m. Eight passengers were subsequently taken to a nearby hospital, with their current conditions unknown.

Avianca mentioned in a statement that the flight encountered unexpected turbulence during its journey, prompting the diversion to Miami International Airport as a precautionary measure in line with safety protocols. The airline disclosed that three crew members and six passengers were affected, without specifying which individuals were hospitalized. The Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Department reported transferring one person to the main trauma center and the rest to local hospitals via private ambulances after responding to a medical emergency regarding turbulence on the aircraft.

Witnesses, including passenger Maria Paula Jimenez, described multiple fire department vehicles with flashing lights on the tarmac upon landing in Miami. Jimenez expressed that the situation felt abnormal upon arrival. The flight was rescheduled to depart for JFK International Airport at 8:15 a.m. with the remaining passengers, as per Chin. The airport’s flight tracker indicated the departure of Avianca Flight 042 at the specified time. Avianca assured that arrangements had been made for the unaffected passengers to proceed to New York while maintaining communication with the passengers and crew impacted by the incident, emphasizing the airline’s commitment to prioritizing safety for all travelers and staff.
