“Beware of Rising Fake Call Center Scam Targeting Virgin Media O2 Users”

Virgin Media O2 users are being warned about a concerning new scam that is on the rise. The telecommunications company has raised an alert due to a significant increase in fake call center numbers generated by artificial intelligence (AI) targeting individuals.

Reports suggest that millions may have already fallen victim to calling these fraudulent numbers, connecting them to cybercriminals attempting to steal sensitive information, such as banking details.

Recent data indicates that approximately 13% of UK consumers have encountered fake customer service numbers through search engines or AI tools, as criminals exploit AI technology to deceive unsuspecting individuals seeking assistance from reputable brands.

With the reliance on AI-generated search results growing, hackers have found an opportunity to deceive users into divulging personal information. Virgin Media emphasizes the importance of only using official service numbers provided on the company’s website, apps, or bills.

For those seeking assistance from O2 or Virgin Media, it is recommended to contact 202 from an O2 device or 150 from a landline, respectively. Additionally, caution is advised when encountering numbers from search engine results, social media, or AI tools.

Furthermore, individuals are urged not to disclose security codes or personal details to unsolicited callers, regardless of their claimed identity. Murray Mackenzie, Director of Fraud Prevention at Virgin Media O2, highlighted the risk posed by fake numbers appearing in search results or chatbots, urging vigilance and reporting suspicious numbers to prevent scams.

Virgin Media O2 is actively working to safeguard customers by blocking known scammer numbers and utilizing AI to flag suspicious calls. Individuals are encouraged to report dubious numbers to 7726 to aid in shutting down scams promptly.
