The Toronto Blue Jays inaugurated their new Hall of Excellence on Saturday, marking a special occasion with the induction of Buck Martinez as part of the 2026 honorees at Rogers Centre. Celebrating their 50th anniversary season, the Blue Jays introduced this section to pay tribute to the franchise’s most significant contributors. The Hall of Excellence, located on the concourse behind right field at the downtown stadium, now showcases the 11 individuals previously honored on the Level of Excellence.
Martinez, a former Blue Jays player and manager, was set to be inducted before the Blue Jays’ game against the Seattle Mariners. The 77-year-old, who also had a long tenure as a team broadcaster before retiring last year, joins a prestigious list of Hall of Excellence members including José Bautista, Paul Beeston, George Bell, Joe Carter, Tom Cheek, Carlos Delgado, Tony Fernandez, Cito Gaston, Pat Gillick, Roy Halladay, and Dave Stieb.
Dave Stieb, speaking at a media event earlier in the day, praised Martinez as an exceptional teammate who had a calming influence, particularly during intense moments on the field. The Hall of Excellence aims to honor players, coaches, managers, builders, and broadcasters both past and present, connecting fans with the individuals who have shaped the Blue Jays’ legacy.
Martinez concluded his playing career in 1986 after a successful 17-year stint in Major League Baseball with the Blue Jays, Kansas City Royals, and Milwaukee Brewers. Known for his strategic play behind the plate, Martinez was commended by George Bell for his mentorship of young pitchers and overall leadership on the field.
Beyond his playing days, Martinez transitioned into broadcasting in 1982, covering playoff games and the all-star game while still an active player. He later ventured into television broadcasting in 1987, calling over 4,000 Blue Jays games and managing the team briefly in 2001 and 2002. Martinez’s broadcasting career extended to various platforms, including ESPN, XM Radio, TBS, and MLB International, showcasing his diverse contributions to the sport.
In recognition of his significant impact on baseball in Canada, Martinez was honored with the Jack Graney Award from the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame in 2023.
