British boxing champion Anthony Joshua has surprised many by deciding to relocate from the United Kingdom to Dubai, despite the ongoing tensions between the US and Iran in the United Arab Emirates. Joshua, 36, who hails from Watford with Nigerian roots, rose to fame as a heavyweight world champion and an Olympic gold medalist in the 2012 London Games. He is now set to become a resident of the UAE, as indicated in documents filed for his £150 million business empire, where he must declare his country of residence.
The paperwork reveals that Joshua proceeded with his move despite the recent conflict involving the USA, Israel, and Iran, with the UAE being targeted by Iranian missiles and drones over the past two weeks. This situation has prompted over 100,000 Britons to evacuate the region and return to the UK.
While Dubai’s appealing climate and amenities attract many, the absence of income tax is a significant draw for the affluent. Joshua would have been subject to UK tax on his substantial earnings, including a £10.1 million dividend payment in 2024 and £6.3 million in 2023. His company, Sparta Promotions, also reported profits of £20.396 million and paid £6.65 million in UK taxes in 2024.
Joshua’s decision coincides with fellow celebrities like Rio Ferdinand and Kate Ferdinand sharing their experiences of living in Dubai during the US-Iran conflict. The Ferdinands described moments of fear and uncertainty due to the sound of military activities overhead, but also expressed gratitude for feeling safe and well-protected.
Kate reassured followers on Instagram about their safety following missile strikes in Dubai, emphasizing the government’s efforts to maintain security. Joshua is joining a growing list of high-profile figures, including former boxer Amir Khan and actress Lindsay Lohan, who have chosen to make Dubai their new home.
