Boy, 11, Shields Sister from Firework, Sparks Calls for Safety Training

An 11-year-old boy, hailed as a hero for shielding his two-year-old sister from a wayward firework, has left his mother advocating for mandatory training for individuals handling explosives.

Following the incident at a firework display near Pontypool, Wales, where Olly sustained severe burns while protecting his sister, concerned mother Charlotte Baggot emphasized the need for businesses selling fireworks to provide comprehensive safety guidelines to customers.

Charlotte, a 36-year-old stay-at-home mom, expressed her distress to the Mirror, highlighting the lack of proper safety measures at the event. She emphasized the importance of ensuring individuals receive adequate training before organizing public firework displays to prevent similar accidents.

Although Olly is recovering well from his injuries, his mother stated that he will be avoiding firework displays in the future due to the trauma of the incident. Charlotte is apprehensive that without new regulations in place, other children might face similar dangers.

During the Guy Fawkes display in Penygarn on November 5, Olly noticed a stray firework heading towards the crowd and instinctively shielded his sister, resulting in burns to his neck, fingers, and head. Recounting the harrowing experience, Charlotte described Olly’s courageous act of protecting his siblings.

Despite missing the opportunity to participate in the Remembrance Sunday parade, where he was scheduled to perform with his bagpipe band, Olly’s bravery and selfless actions have garnered immense praise from his community. The ensemble spokesperson commended his quick thinking and bravery, highlighting the potential risks Olly faced to ensure his sister’s safety.
