“Boy, 18 Months, Suffers Heart Attack and Tongue Loss from Drain Cleaner Mishap”

A young boy experienced a heart attack and tongue loss after mistakenly ingesting drain unblocker, leaving him in constant distress with his mouth sealed shut, according to his father. Sam Anwar Alshameri, who was just 13 months old when the incident occurred, consumed caustic soda from a container on the floor in his Birmingham home around half a year ago.

Following the accident, Sam suffered burns to his mouth, lips, and tongue, leading to a prolonged heart attack and an extended stay in intensive care. To support his son’s medical needs, Nadeen Alshameri, 37, initiated a GoFundMe campaign for financial assistance.

Due to severe chemical burns, Sam’s mouth has been effectively closed off, necessitating tube feeding as he cannot eat normally. Despite being only 18 months old, Sam requires constant supervision as he struggles to understand his limitations and often tries to put foreign objects in his mouth, prompting concerns of further harm.

Nadeen shared the challenges he and his wife have faced since the tragic incident, noting Sam’s constant crying and frustration. Recently, the family received news from NHS Birmingham Children’s Hospital about potential new treatments for Sam, including surgical interventions to improve his quality of life.

Medical professionals are expected to perform a series of operations on Sam, beginning with opening his mouth to assess the damage caused by the incident. Nadeen expressed gratitude for the support received through the GoFundMe initiative, which has garnered significant contributions towards Sam’s medical care.

In search of advice from experts in reconstructive surgery for similar pediatric accidents, Mr. Alshameri aims to explore all avenues for Sam’s recovery, irrespective of location. The family remains hopeful for positive outcomes as they await further medical interventions for Sam’s condition.
