Brandon’s mayoral candidates engaged in discussions about growth and tax predictability for southwestern Manitoba’s largest city during a Friday evening event. Incumbent Jeff Fawcett and challenger, former Brandon East MLA Len Isleifson, participated in an almost two-hour debate hosted by the Brandon Sun, Brandon University, and WCGtv. The debate, moderated by Kerry Auriat, took place at Brandon University’s Lorne Watson Recital Hall.
The candidates focused on strategies to boost the city’s population, economy, and reputation while ensuring more stable tax rates that provide better value for residents. Both contenders pledged to oversee the growth of the city, which currently stands at 54,000 residents.
Fawcett highlighted his “80,000 by 2040” initiative, emphasizing the importance of collaborative efforts between government and the community to attract new residents and industries. He also proposed initiatives such as securing an eastern flight service from the Brandon airport and establishing a medical campus in the city.
Isleifson stressed the need for mayors to work alongside the council to achieve tangible results, emphasizing the importance of reducing bureaucratic obstacles to foster a business-friendly environment in Brandon. He advocated for positioning the city as a transportation hub given its strategic location on the Trans Canada highway, along with its airport and rail connections.
The debate also touched on concerns regarding recent tax increases in Brandon, with both candidates acknowledging the issue. Isleifson criticized tax hikes that burden residents, while Fawcett defended the need for increased taxes to support expanded city services. The candidates agreed on the importance of aligning tax rates with the Consumer Price Index, albeit recognizing the challenges posed by unexpected expenses.
Other topics addressed during the debate included the revitalization of downtown areas, public safety, infrastructure development, and the need for greater transparency in decision-making by the city council. The candidates emphasized the significance of addressing these issues to ensure a prosperous future for Brandon.
The debate highlighted the challenges facing the city, including the financial implications of addressing key issues like public safety and infrastructure. Both candidates acknowledged the likelihood of future tax increases but emphasized the importance of ensuring that residents receive value for the taxes they pay.
As the election day approaches on October 28, the citizens of Brandon are eager to see how the mayoral candidates’ proposed strategies will shape the future of their city.
