The Toronto Blue Jays will honor veteran broadcaster Buck Martinez by inducting him into the team’s newly established Hall of Excellence at Rogers Centre this Saturday. Martinez, who recently retired after announcing over 4,000 games, had a career spanning almost four decades with the Blue Jays, serving as a player, manager, and broadcaster.
Expressing his gratitude on CBC Radio’s “Metro Morning,” Martinez described the induction as a surprising and great honor. He credited Blue Jays fans for their warm reception over the years, making him feel like a part of their families. Known for his distinctive broadcasting style and American drawl, Martinez’s iconic phrases like “a swing and a drive” and “get outta here ball” became synonymous with his commentary.
Reflecting on his broadcasting evolution, Martinez shared that his unique phrases were inspired by his time in Milwaukee and his experiences as a player. Transitioning into retirement, he highlighted the significant change of not being involved in professional baseball activities for the first time since 1967.
Despite intending to participate in the Jays’ 50th season celebrations, Martinez had to step back due to health reasons after battling cancer for the second time in 2025. He joyfully announced being cancer-free and in good health now. The Hall of Excellence, located on the 100 Level concourse behind right field, will feature an exhibit honoring key figures who contributed to the franchise, including current members on the Level of Excellence.
Martinez, who previously played for the Kansas City Royals and Milwaukee Brewers before joining the Blue Jays in 1981, initially felt apprehensive about coming to Toronto but soon recognized the city’s passion for baseball. Praising the city’s vibrant baseball culture, Martinez described Toronto as a destination with a strong fan base. Reflecting on the recent World Series, he lauded the thrilling Game 7 and the team’s chemistry.
Despite the challenges faced by the Blue Jays, Martinez expressed surprise at Vladimir Guerrero Jr.’s struggles during a tough season, emphasizing the game’s inherent difficulty even for top players.
