“Business Secretary compares Farage to Enoch Powell”

Business Secretary Peter Kyle has likened Nigel Farage to the politics of Enoch Powell in today’s context. The remarks were made during the Co-operative Party conference, where Kyle criticized the Reform UK leader. Kyle emphasized the importance of achieving sustained economic growth to rebuild trust in democracy and good governance. He warned against the allure of far-right parties like Reform UK, attributing their appeal to a lack of economic progress.

Referring to Enoch Powell’s controversial 1968 speech, Kyle highlighted the historical impact of divisive rhetoric on racial tensions. This is not the first time Kyle has clashed with Farage, previously criticizing his stance on the Government’s Online Safety Act. In response, Kyle argued that individuals like Jimmy Savile could exploit children online if not for regulatory measures, aligning critics of the Act with harmful intentions.

At the same event, Communities Secretary Steve Reed also addressed the issue of parties exploiting societal divisions, pointing to Reform UK as a prime example. Reed emphasized the need for unity in building successful communities, regardless of differences in backgrounds. The Co-operative Party, affiliated with Labour, stressed the importance of fostering collaboration to achieve collective prosperity.
