The decision was made swiftly after the game’s abrupt halt, prioritizing the safety of players, officials, and fans.
Brampton initially took a 6-0 lead in the final, with Winnipeg catching up shortly after. The game was paused when Sea Bears’ Xavier Moon slipped on the court, prompting the cancellation. The championship will now be decided in a single game on Saturday in Winnipeg at 3:30 p.m. ET, a shift from the originally planned multi-game series.
The league cited fairness and practicality in returning to the single-game championship format used in previous years. Meanwhile, Brampton’s CEO, Al Whitley, expressed regret over the cancellation. The Honey Badgers had won the first two encounters with the Sea Bears this season.
Having secured impressive playoff victories, the Honey Badgers and Sea Bears are now vying for the championship title. Winnipeg’s playoff journey included defeating the Saskatoon Mamba and the favored Vancouver Bandits. Brampton, on the other hand, triumphed over the Ottawa BlackJacks and the Niagara River Lions to secure their spot in the final.
Notably, the final will feature a unique off-court story with the Sea Bears and Honey Badgers owned by siblings, David Asper and Leonard Asper, respectively. The championship game promises an exciting showdown between these two competitive teams, eager to claim the CEBL title.
