“Celine Dion Opens Up About Battle with Rare Syndrome”

Celine Dion is gearing up for her upcoming five-week residency in Paris next month and has opened up about her battle with stiff person syndrome. The renowned Canadian singer revealed in an exclusive interview with Harper’s Bazaar that she had been experiencing symptoms of the rare neurological autoimmune disorder for 17 years before being officially diagnosed in 2022.

The debilitating pain she endured, particularly worsening in 2020, often left her struggling to walk and at times necessitated a high dosage of Valium for relief. Stiff person syndrome is a progressive condition that affects a minute portion of the population, leading to rigid muscles and painful spasms triggered by stress, loud noises, or sudden movements. Despite no definitive cause or approved treatment, various therapies can assist in managing the symptoms.

Prior to her diagnosis, Dion would attribute show cancellations to minor ailments like coughs or sinus infections, concealing the severity of her condition. Feeling a sense of dishonesty towards her fans, whom she credits for their unwavering support, Dion acknowledged the guilt of not fully disclosing her health struggles earlier.

Following her diagnosis, Dion made the difficult decision to cancel all remaining shows. While she hasn’t performed publicly since the 2024 Paris Olympics, she is determined to return to the stage in September. To aid her recovery, Dion has been diligently following a rigorous regimen involving medication, physical therapy, vocal therapy, and immunotherapy. Additionally, she dedicates time to 90-minute Pilates sessions three times a week and ballet classes twice a week in preparation for her upcoming performances.

Described as constantly in motion to avoid any potential stiffness, Dion views her recovery and the prospect of performing again as a miraculous opportunity that she deeply appreciates. Expressing a mix of strength, excitement, and nervousness, Dion is eager to make her comeback on stage during her Paris residency, which spans 26 concerts from September 12 to May 29 next year.
