A skilled jockey narrowly escaped death when her pelvis was crushed by a horse she was riding. Sonja Logan, a champion jockey, faced a brutal attack by a group of assailants in 2023 who attempted to steal her car. During the harrowing incident, she endured a broken nose, a cut lip, and three broken front teeth just three weeks before her wedding.
The attackers fled when the alarm was raised, and they remain at large to this day. Recounting the excruciating pain she felt with a half-ton racehorse pinning her down, Logan described it as the most intense pain she had ever experienced. She was riding Jumping Power Two, a horse trained by her husband Tommy, which had won its last four races under her guidance. The incident occurred when the six-year-old gelding became frightened by something.
Speaking to Mirror Racing, Logan explained, “We were at the barriers when he reared up. The back gate opened, causing me to fall to the ground with the horse landing on top of me, crushing my pelvis. The impact was severe, and the horse remained stuck on top of me for a period, intensifying the pain.”
Following the accident, Logan was swiftly attended to by paramedics who administered pain relief and fitted her with a pelvic brace before transferring her to Darwin Royal Hospital. Due to the severity of her pelvic injury, she was later airlifted to Adelaide Royal Hospital for specialized treatment. Medical procedures involved the insertion of two screws in her right hip and a plate with multiple screws to stabilize her crushed pelvis.
Reflecting on the incident, Logan expressed gratitude for narrowly avoiding a fatal outcome. She mentioned the intense pain she endured, ranking it as the most excruciating she had ever felt and expressed fear over potentially sustaining a spinal injury.
Currently, Logan is recovering at home and can move around with the aid of a walking frame. She anticipates a recovery period of six to eight months, depending on the healing process and rehabilitation progress. She is determined to return to riding once she is physically able, emphasizing that the decision will be based on her pain tolerance at that time.
Despite her resilience, Logan faced internal struggles following a previous carjacking incident but managed to overcome her challenges through competitive bodybuilding. She acknowledged the unwavering support of her husband Tommy and her support network in helping her navigate through her recent setback.
In a statement, Logan expressed her relief that the horse’s actions were unintentional, unlike her previous assault experience. She highlighted the importance of having a supportive circle of people around her, particularly recognizing her husband’s consistent care and assistance during her recovery journey.
