A man known as the Connecticut Cannibal, Tyree Smith, brutally killed a homeless individual named Angel Gonzalez in 2011 by using a hatchet to bludgeon him and consuming parts of his brain and eyeball in a cemetery. Smith had visited his cousin Nicole Rabb the day before the incident and spoke about Greek gods and his desire to commit a violent act. The following day, covered in blood, he confessed to Rabb about consuming Gonzalez’s organs while drinking Japanese sake, describing the taste of the victim’s eye as similar to an oyster. The mutilated body was discovered in a vacant apartment in Bridgeport in January 2012.
Despite being found not guilty of murder due to insanity, Smith was institutionalized at Whiting Forensic Hospital for 60 years in 2013. Recently, the state’s Psychiatric Security Review Board released Smith under certain conditions, citing his improved condition resulting from medication and treatment for his schizophrenia and substance abuse disorders.
Smith is now under monitored care in a community setting with strict conditions, including ongoing treatment. Dr. Caren Teitelbaum, a forensic psychiatrist, praised Smith’s positive influence on other patients after his stabilization. However, prison records from the Connecticut Department of Correction revealed several conflicts Smith had with fellow inmates, leading to his isolation after an altercation at the Garner Correctional Facility.
The victim’s sister-in-law, Talitha Frazier, remains convinced that Smith poses a danger to society, expressing frustration at his violent behavior despite claiming insanity. Smith apologized for his actions in court, stating that he was not himself during the incident. Frazier was surprised by his remorse during the court proceedings, mentioning that it took two years for Smith to apologize for Gonzalez’s death.
