A man aged 25 in Cork has been formally accused of the homicide of his mother and the injury of his father.
David Gallagher from Shrewsbury Downs, Ballinlough, appeared at Cork District Court today following an incident involving a stabbing on Monday night. Authorities responded to a residence at Shrewsbury Downs around 9 pm on Monday.
Today, Gallagher faced charges for the murder of his mother, Stella Gallagher, 59, at their home on Monday. He was also charged with causing harm to his father, Brian Gallagher, 63, at the same location on the same evening.
Stella Gallagher was rushed to Cork University Hospital on Monday night, where she was later declared deceased. She was a chemical engineer who had a long tenure at Eli Lilly in Cork, as mentioned by CorkBeo.
During the court proceedings, Dt Sgt Niall Hayes from Blackrock Garda Station presented evidence of the arrest, charges, and caution. Gallagher remained unresponsive when the charges were presented to him at 1.27 pm today while in custody at Bridewell Garda Station.
Sgt John Kelleher stated that authorities would be requesting a custody extension at Cork District Court on November 26, as bail is typically not granted at this level for murder charges.
Defense solicitor Shane Collins Daly sought and was granted free legal aid for Gallagher, who is currently unemployed. The solicitor informed the court that Gallagher had received regular medical check-ups while in custody, including one at 11 am on the day of the hearing, and had been provided with necessary medication.
Mr. Collins Daly requested urgent medical and psychiatric assessments for Gallagher upon his transfer to Cork Prison. The presiding judge approved the request and ordered medical care for the defendant during his time in prison.
The judge decided to keep Gallagher in custody until his next court appearance at Cork District Court via video link on November 26.
