A man and woman are now facing a slew of charges following a string of thefts, a robbery, and reckless driving incidents in and around the Halifax area.
The RCMP announced in a press release on Friday that the investigation kicked off after a woman in a Honda Civic reportedly stole fuel from a gas station in Fall River, N.S., towards the end of July. Shortly after, a Civic was reported stolen, and it was discovered that a man and woman had borrowed the car earlier in July but failed to return it.
Subsequently, over the following weeks, multiple thefts were reported from various businesses in Lower Sackville, Fall River, Upper Tantallon, Bedford, Hubbards, and Greenwood. The suspect in each case was identified as a woman, with several instances noting the suspect fleeing in the stolen vehicle.
Police disclosed that they made several attempts to pull over the vehicle, but it managed to evade them each time.
In one of these attempts on August 11, officers found a man and woman asleep in the stolen vehicle at a convenience store in Rawdon Gold Mines. When the officers tried to apprehend them, the driver reversed into a police vehicle and sped away at high speed.
On August 14, law enforcement responded to a robbery at a business in Upper Tantallon where a man and woman filled a shopping cart with goods and left without payment. An officer nearby witnessed the duo loading the stolen items into a Honda Civic. When the officer tried to arrest the woman, she fled in the vehicle, narrowly missing hitting a store employee who intervened.
The man and woman were eventually apprehended in Falmouth, N.S., and the car was recovered in the Windsor area.
The 33-year-old man and 24-year-old woman, both residents of Dartmouth, appeared in Halifax provincial court this week. The woman is facing charges including robbery, resisting arrest, dangerous operation of a conveyance, fleeing from a police officer, theft of a motor vehicle, theft, and possession of stolen property. The man’s charges include robbery, resisting arrest, possession of stolen property, and theft of a motor vehicle.
Both individuals are scheduled to appear in court again next week.
