“Crypto King Testifies in Kidnapper Sentencing Hearing”

Self-proclaimed “Crypto King” Aiden Pleterski attributed his current self-representation in his ongoing trial to his abduction, as he shared a victim impact statement during the sentencing submissions hearing for his kidnapper on Thursday.

Pleterski, speaking in Superior Court in Toronto, expressed how his abduction had disrupted his life, leading to financial struggles that prevented him from hiring a defense lawyer to counter the accusations made against him.

Facing charges of fraud over $5,000 and money laundering, Pleterski is currently undergoing a jury trial in the same courthouse. He has begun cross-examining witnesses called by the Crown, with many more yet to testify.

Last year, Deren Akyeam-Pong pleaded guilty to nine charges related to Pleterski’s kidnapping, including kidnapping, assault, and gun-related offenses.

The kidnapping incident occurred in December 2022 when Pleterski, now 27, was lured under the guise of a potential investment meeting and subsequently abducted in Toronto. He endured a harrowing three-day ordeal involving threats, torture, and physical abuse, including waterboarding, burns, and beatings with golf clubs.

Three other individuals have also been implicated in Pleterski’s kidnapping, with their trial scheduled to commence later this year.

Pleterski, in court, expressed his distress over the prospect of sharing a cell with his abductors, highlighting the emotional toll and ongoing trauma he continues to grapple with following the ordeal.

Meanwhile, the prosecution in Pleterski’s fraud and money laundering trial alleges that he misused investor funds for personal gain, including extravagant expenses like luxury cars, private jet flights, and extravagant shopping sprees.

In his victim impact statement, Pleterski emphasized that no financial dispute justifies the violent actions taken against him and expressed a desire to move forward without being defined by the traumatic events.

The Crown prosecutor is seeking a 23-year sentence for Akyeam-Pong in connection to the kidnapping charges and additional gun and drug-related offenses, while the defense is pushing for a 12-year term.

The sentencing submissions are ongoing, with Pleterski’s fraud trial set to continue on the following day.
