The dam is a crucial water source for the town. Mayor Jamie Myra emphasized the importance of prioritizing water for essential needs such as drinking, cooking, hygiene, and sanitation.
Efforts are underway to stabilize the breach and reduce water flow at the dam while engineers assess the situation. The Lunenburg County Regional Emergency Management Organization has partially activated its emergency coordination center to assist with planning and public communications.
Authorities have advised residents to steer clear of the Dares Lake area to ensure the safety of the working crews. Mayor Myra assured the public that there is currently no immediate danger, and no evacuation orders have been issued.
