“Dartmouth Resident in Nova Scotia Votes in U.S. Midterms”

A Dartmouth resident feels a sense of responsibility in participating in the upcoming U.S. midterms. Stacy Chesnutt, originally from Tennessee, expressed concerns about the future of U.S. elections and the current administration, emphasizing the importance of her vote against the status quo.

Scheduled for November 3, the U.S. congressional elections are significant as they determine the balance of power in both the House of Representatives and the Senate, both of which are currently controlled by the Republican Party.

While residing in Nova Scotia for two decades, Chesnutt highlighted her disapproval of the current policies under the Congress and President Trump, underscoring her decision to support the Democratic Party through her mail-in ballot from New York.

Chesnutt emphasized the impact of every vote and the need for active participation in the democratic process, acknowledging the unpredictability of election outcomes despite early polling favoring the Democrats.

As an advocate for women’s rights and a long-distance runner, Chesnutt stressed the importance of preserving women’s rights in the U.S., reflecting her broader concerns about the current political climate.

Steve Shard, a dual citizen and Halifax resident, highlighted foreign policy issues as a major concern leading up to the midterms, citing global unrest caused by President Trump’s decisions, such as conflicts with Iran and actions in the Caribbean.

Shard emphasized the significance of voting as a means for Americans to influence the direction of their government and shape future policies.

Groups like Democrats Abroad and Republicans Overseas Canada are actively encouraging Americans overseas to vote, recognizing the impact of expat votes on U.S. policies and the importance of ensuring representation that aligns with their views.

Randi Weitzner, a volunteer at Get Out The Vote, assists Americans abroad in navigating the voting process, noting an increase in first-time and senior voters seeking to participate in the upcoming elections.

Weitzner emphasized the civic responsibility of participating in democracy, particularly in recent years, urging Americans to access state-specific voting information online through resources like VoteFromAbroad.org.
