At least 13 individuals lost their lives in a large fire that swept through high-rise residential buildings in Hong Kong. The fire, which started at Wang Fuk Court housing complex in the northern Tai Po district at around 2:51 pm local time on Wednesday, has affected multiple buildings. The complex, housing approximately 4,600 people in nearly 2,000 flats, is now the focus of 767 firefighters striving to control the flames.
As the firefighters continue their efforts late into the evening, numerous apartments are still engulfed in flames, and the death toll stands at 13. Witnesses reported hearing explosions and observing sparks emanating from the burning structures, prompting many to evacuate the area. Due to the fire, several schools in the Tai Po district will remain closed the following day, with educational psychologists providing support to affected students at designated temporary shelters.
Tragically, firefighter Ho Wai-ho lost his life while battling the blaze, prompting tributes from Tang Ping-keung, Hong Kong’s Secretary for Security. Tang expressed deep sorrow over Ho’s passing and extended condolences to his family, acknowledging his sacrifice in the line of duty. President Xi Jinping of China also offered condolences to the families of the fire victims and called for concerted efforts to extinguish the fire and minimize further casualties and property damage.
The fire, which began in Wang Fuk Court at 2:51 pm local time, quickly escalated, leading to the evacuation of over 1,000 residents to nearby shelters. With the fire still raging at 11:32 pm local time, the fate of those trapped inside remains uncertain. Emergency responders, including 767 firefighters, 57 ambulances, and 400 police officers, are actively involved in the rescue and containment operations at the housing complex.
