Shocking video footage capturing the deadly impact of a tornado that resulted in the tragic death of an elderly British woman has surfaced online. The distressing clip shows a tornado-like phenomenon ravaging a popular holiday campsite in Algarve, Portugal, causing over two dozen individuals to sustain injuries.
The 85-year-old victim was residing at the HolaCamp site near Albufeira when the unexpected severe weather event struck, hurling debris across the resort and prompting panicked tourists to flee for safety. Social media has been abuzz with footage of the tornado forming in the distance before wreaking havoc in the Portuguese town, leaving a trail of destruction in its aftermath.
Holidaymakers, predominantly Britons, frantically evacuated as the powerful twister tore through the campsite and a nearby hotel, overturning vehicles, demolishing bungalows, and launching rubble into the air. Authorities confirmed that 28 individuals were injured, with one person initially reported missing. Tragically, the missing victim, identified as the British woman, was later found lifeless beneath the debris.
Portugal’s meteorological agency indicated a high likelihood that the destructive weather event was a tornado, as striking images revealed flattened structures and homes reduced to rubble. Eyewitness footage depicted shocked campers surrounded by the wreckage, struggling to comprehend the extent of the devastation caused by the storm.
The extreme wind occurrence struck at 10:07 am and may have been intensified by Storm Claudia, which battered the UK the previous day. Nineteen individuals suffered injuries at the Eden Hotel, with one in serious condition, while two individuals sustained severe injuries at the campsite. Among the injured were Portuguese, British, and Spanish nationals spanning from six to 86 years old.
