Federal Defence Minister David McGuinty emphasized the significant military investment in Alberta and the importance of a robust Alberta within Canada. His remarks coincide with the upcoming referendum on Confederation scheduled for October 19.
Speaking alongside Alberta Premier Danielle Smith at the Canadian Forces Base Edmonton, McGuinty praised Alberta for its visionary thinking and large-scale projects that inspire Canadians. He highlighted that Confederation represents a longstanding national commitment demonstrated through mutual support, especially during times of conflict.
McGuinty reiterated that Alberta is benefiting from $8 billion in continuous funding, including $550 million allocated for establishing the western operating base for the Air Force’s CC-330 Husky fleet. Smith acknowledged that this funding positions Alberta at the forefront of air defense and signifies successful collaboration between Canada and Ottawa.
The referendum ballot will feature ten questions, including whether Alberta should remain part of Canada or proceed with a second binding referendum on independence.
