Denmark edges Canada 4-3 in women’s soccer friendly

Olivia Holdt netted two goals and provided an assist as Denmark secured a 4-3 win over Canada in a women’s international soccer friendly held at BMO Field in Toronto. Pernille Harder and Janni Thomsen also found the back of the net for the visitors, scoring three goals in a rapid nine-minute span during the first half.

Canada responded with goals from Olivia Smith, Evelyne Viens, and Delaney Pridham in front of a crowd of 12,112 at the lakefront stadium on a sunny afternoon. The match followed a 1-1 draw in Montreal, where Canada won an unofficial shootout 4-2 after Smith scored a late equalizer.

The Canadians, ranked ninth, began the game with a 4-2-3-1 formation, while the 12th-ranked Danes opted for a 3-4-3 setup. Kailen Sheridan started in goal for Canada, with Jessie Fleming captaining the team.

Pridham opened the scoring for Canada in the 10th minute, followed by Denmark’s scoring surge fueled by defensive errors. Holdt, benefiting from a turnover, scored a remarkable goal from distance. Harder and Thomsen added to Denmark’s lead before Canada’s Viens and Smith reduced the deficit.

Denmark’s Thomsen extended the lead in the second half, but Smith’s goal kept Canada in the game. Despite their efforts, Canada, under coach Casey Stoney, couldn’t secure a win against a top-15 opponent. The friendlies served as preparation for Canada’s upcoming match against Panama in the CONCACAF W Championship, a qualifying tournament for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup and the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

The match also marked Allysha Chapman’s 100th and final international appearance for Canada, recognized alongside other players for their milestone achievements. With this result, Canada now holds a 3-4-1 record against Denmark in all-time meetings.
