Detroit’s Tourism Bureau Halts Marketing to Canada Amid Strained U.S. Relations

Detroit’s tourism bureau has ceased its marketing efforts towards Canada, citing strained relations due to what they perceive as “antagonistic” actions by the United States. Tourism Detroit expressed eagerness to welcome back Canadian visitors once tensions between the two countries ease, with president and CEO Claude Molinari emphasizing that they do not hold any grudges against those who choose to avoid traveling to the U.S.

Molinari highlighted the impact of U.S. government policies on their tourism sector, noting that historically, Tourism Detroit allocated a significant portion of its budget to attract Canadian tourists. However, they have witnessed a decrease in Canadian visitors over the past two years, with a recent slight increase.

In the interim, Tourism Detroit has redirected its marketing budget to target European tourists while waiting for a resolution on tariff issues between the U.S. and Canada. The organization plans to resume marketing in Canada once a more respectful and positive relationship is established between Ottawa and Washington.

Despite the ongoing tensions, the Toledo Zoo in Ohio is moving forward with its annual Canadian member appreciation day, offering free perks to over 100 members as a gesture of gratitude for their continued support. The event, which started post-COVID-19 lockdowns, aims to thank Canadian members who have maintained their memberships despite border restrictions.

Molinari expressed optimism for a resurgence in Canadian tourism to Detroit in the future, acknowledging the strained relationship but hoping for a rekindling of the historic connection between the two nations. He emphasized the importance of not being presumptuous about Canadians’ return but expressed a genuine desire to welcome them back warmly.
