“Distinguishing COVID-19, Cold, or Flu: Key Symptoms to Know”

As the winter season approaches, distinguishing between COVID-19, the common cold, or the flu can be challenging due to overlapping symptoms. Seeking a correct diagnosis is crucial for appropriate treatment. Dr. Rupa Parmar, a GP and medical director at Midland Health, emphasized the importance of recognizing key differences among these illnesses to guide individuals in seeking medical advice if uncertain.

Dr. Parmar highlighted that a distinctive indicator of COVID-19 is experiencing shortness of breath, which is uncommon in colds and flu but prevalent in COVID-19 due to lung inflammation. The NHS also identifies breathlessness as a hallmark of COVID-19 and similar respiratory conditions.

Furthermore, Dr. Parmar explained that the nature of coughs varies across these illnesses. While colds present with a mild cough and flu with a dry cough, COVID-19 manifests as a persistent dry cough, often with multiple episodes within a day. Additionally, the loss of smell or taste is a distinctive symptom of COVID-19, indicating the likelihood of infection.

Notably, the onset of symptoms differs, with cold symptoms developing gradually, flu symptoms emerging suddenly, and COVID-19 symptoms starting mildly and potentially worsening over time. Understanding the combination and severity of symptoms is key in distinguishing between these illnesses.

Although self-isolation regulations have been lifted, the NHS advises individuals experiencing symptoms to stay at home, minimize contact, and resume normal activities once they feel better without a high temperature. Opting for caution and consulting a healthcare provider when in doubt is always recommended for prompt and accurate medical guidance.
